Some First for our Community

The first gay right demonstration to be held at the White House.

                On May 29th 1965, picket by ECHO. Seven men and three women participated, including activist Frank Kameny, organizer Jack Nichols, and Lilli Vincenz, The sole lesbian. The picket received nationwide television Coverage.

 

The first openly gay elected Official.

                Kathy Kozachenko, running as a member of the Human Rights Party, she was elected to Ann Arbor Michigan, city council in 1974. She was the first gay person to serve on the council, however: The Previous fall, two outgoing council members who have been elected in 1972, Nancy Wechsler and Gerald DeGrieck, had come out as gay.

 

The first openly gay mayor in the US.

                Gerald E. Ulrich, elected mayor of Bunceton, Missouri in 1980.

 

The first openly lesbian mayor in the US.

                Valerie Terrigno, of West Hollywood, California in 1984. The Top Vote-getter among the five city council members, she became mayor a month after her election to the council. She later resigned and was convicted of embezzling government funds while operating an employment and housing agency.
